In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a sophisticated set of procedures designed to facilitate pregnancy.

It serves as a treatment for infertility, a condition characterized by the inability to conceive after a year of attempting for most couples. Additionally, IVF can be employed to mitigate the risk of transmitting genetic disorders to offspring.

The IVF process involves the extraction of mature eggs from the ovaries, which are then fertilized by sperm in a laboratory setting. Subsequently, one or more of the resulting fertilized eggs, referred to as embryos, are transferred into the uterus, the organ where fetal development occurs.

A complete IVF cycle typically spans approximately 2 to 3 weeks, although the various stages may be divided, potentially extending the overall duration.

IVF is recognized as the most effective form of fertility treatment that encompasses the manipulation of eggs, embryos, and sperm. Collectively, these procedures are categorized under assisted reproductive technology.

The IVF process can utilize a couple's own eggs and sperm, or it may involve the use of eggs, sperm, or embryos from known or anonymous donors. In certain situations, a gestational carrier may be employed, wherein an embryo is implanted into the carrier's uterus.

The likelihood of achieving a healthy pregnancy through IVF is influenced by numerous factors, including the age of the individuals involved and the underlying causes of infertility. Furthermore, IVF entails procedures that can be lengthy, costly, and invasive.

If multiple embryos are transferred to the uterus, there is a possibility of a multiple pregnancy, resulting in the birth of more than one child.

The IVF procedure consists of five essential phases:

Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation

The initial phase involves administering fertility medications to the woman to enhance the production of eggs. Typically, a woman releases a single egg each month; however, these medications stimulate the ovaries to generate multiple eggs. Throughout this stage, the woman will undergo regular trans vaginal ultrasounds to monitor ovarian activity, along with blood tests to assess hormone levels.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval

This step entails a minor surgical procedure known as follicular aspiration, which is performed to extract the eggs from the woman's ovaries. Usually conducted in a healthcare provider's office, the woman is given anaesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure. Utilizing ultrasound guidance, a thin needle is inserted through the vagina into the ovaries to access the follicles containing the eggs. The needle is linked to a suction tool that pulls out the eggs and the fluid around them from every follicle one at a time. The same procedure is applied to the other ovary. While some cramping may occur post-procedure, it typically resolves within a day. In rare instances, a pelvic laparoscopy may be necessary for egg retrieval. If a woman is unable to produce eggs, donor eggs may be utilized.

Step 3: Insemination and Fertilization

At this point, the best quality sperm from the male partner is mixed with the top-tier eggs. This process is referred to as insemination. The eggs and sperm are then placed in a controlled environment where fertilization usually occurs a few hours after insemination. If the likelihood of fertilization appears low, a technique known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be employed, where sperm is directly injected into the egg. Many fertility clinics routinely perform ICSI on select eggs, even when conditions seem favourable.

Step 4: Embryo Culture

Once fertilization occurs, the egg begins to divide and develop into an embryo. Laboratory personnel will consistently monitor the embryo to ensure its proper growth and development.
